Even knowing he wobbled on the brink of losing his hard fought for control, Logan didn't leave.
He sucked in a chest full of air and hit the chime.
Jax opened the door and froze, eyes wide and the color draining from his face as if he'd just seen
a ghost.
"What are you doing here?" Jax asked, his tone more frightened than angry.
Logan said, keeping his voice down, "That's no way to greet your captain." He chuckled, trying
to lighten the mood and ease the obvious fear on Jax's face, but it didn't work. Something was up.
"Are you all right?" He moved to enter, but Jax didn't give ground.
"I'm... fine." Jax looked up and down the corridor. "Do you need something?" He hung in the
doorway, his body language telling Logan to go away.
No fucking way.
"To come in and talk." Logan still didn't know what he wanted to say to Jax. He knew what he
wanted to do, but that wasn't going to happen. He couldn't let it, couldn't let himself become
involved for fear of losing control.
Jax looked him over, nodded, and stepped aside. He went to his desk and sat on the chair, leaving
Logan standing in the small space.
"What about?" Jax wrapped his arms around himself, expression guarded, still distressed about
something.
"What's going on? Something's got you upset." Logan kept his distance, hovering like a shuttle
off Jax's bow.
"It's just--" Jax licked his lips and stared up into Logan's face. "I know about the other
counselor's reports."
"What about them?" Something crawled up Logan's spine--concern, fear, anger?
"They're fakes. I know Mars falsified his reports on you. I know you didn't use him on the last
run. That means you've been without sexual counseling for almost two years." Jax's voice rose,
the tremble in it working into Logan's head as he picked up on the fear.
"Oh, so that's what's got you frightened?" Logan cocked an eyebrow.
"So?" Jax glared at him.
Logan shrugged. "Anything else?"
"Anything else?" Jax shouted as he surged to his feet, fists clenched at his sides. "Are you out of
your mind?"
"That's your real question, isn't it?" Logan leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, trying to
look less threatening, but on the inside, his guts churned.
"One of them." Jax paced the room. "Mars could be fired over that. You could be fired, too.
You've put not one but two missions in jeopardy, Forge."
"Call me Logan." Logan watched the man as he spun, his hair whipping around his shoulders.
God, he was gorgeous. Logan almost lost sight of this new problem--Jax telling Magnus Corp
and ending Logan's career.
Jax shook his head as if to clear it. "What? You know what this means? If I don't report this, I'm
putting myself in jeopardy also."
"So we all have something to lose if you tell what you suspect. You. Me. Mars."
Jax halted. "And the mission. The crew. You put them in danger, too."
"Calm down. No one is in danger, Jax. I was fine then and I'm fine now. Mars knew what was up
and he counseled me. He just didn't put down everything in the records. That's all."
Jax chewed his lip, thinking it over. "You saw him?"
"Yes." Logan preferred not to give all the details, never mind the entire truth.
"And he didn't put in what really happened? That's all?"
"Yeah."
"Then why aren't you coming to see me?" Jax's eyes narrowed.
Logan shrugged. No way could he explain his camera or make a deal with this ship's counselor
like the one he'd made with Mars.
"I've found a way around my problem, that's all." Logan narrowed his eyes and scanned Jax
again. "But there's something else, isn't there? You're frightened and it's not this crap about
skipping my appointments."
Jax bit his lip harder. He quivered like a wounded animal, afraid to let anyone close enough to
touch him.
"Has someone hurt you? Someone on my ship?" Logan stepped closer to Jax in a protective
move against any threat to his counselor.
Jax swallowed. "No. It's just... nothing, really. My nerves are on end, that's all. But if you want
me to go along with you and not report you, you're going to have to explain what your "special"
circumstances are."
Damn, the man was brave, even in the face of Logan's superior strength and size. Logan closed [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
